What to expect when you come to class
-------------------------Martial Arts Etiquette and Mental (strong mind) Training
Proper etiquette engenders respect for the art, for your instructor, your fellow students and for yourself. It is the first step in Strong Mind Training. Bowing is one of the most visible manifestations of martial art etiquette.
Stretching and warming up
A complete warm up consist of exercising and stretching the major muscle groups and all 164 joints. The most important rule in stretching is never to hold your breath and never to over do it!
“Ki Breathing” or “Ki Cho Ja Ki”
The fundamental breathing exercises, designed to help develop our "Ki" or internal energy.
Basic kicks and punches
By executing proper hand strikes and kicks repeatedly with a strong martial art body posture, students develop the body conditioning, balance and coordination needed to strike with precision, fluidity and power.
Forms
Forms are patterns of movement, which combine hand and kicking techniques. The elegant flowing movement of these forms teaches the student to control his or her posture with timing, balance, speed, coordination, and control.
Weapons Training
Weapons Training perfects the balance between body and weapon. With practice, weapon training is as beneficial to the mind as to the body. It demands concentration and self-control to avoid injury; also, it aids physical conditioning from performing the task. Weapons include staff (long and short), and sword (black belt). Staff training starts at blue belt.
Joint Locking Techniques
Every class student learns a new technique and reviews previous teaching. Techniques allows a small or weaker person to overcome a much stronger opponent. Using these techniques with balance and speed, a student can joint-lock, throw, control and/or redirect an opponent.
Falling Techniques
Every student at their own pace learns how to fall (initially from a sitting position, progressing to a standing position, finally from a jumping height in higher ranks). Once proper break-falls have been mastered Kuk Sool students fall without getting hurt.
Meditation
We practice meditation in class, which helps to clear the mind, leave worries behind, enjoy kuk sool practice and balances body energy. Kuk Sool, mental training is crucial: the body is not strong without a strong mind.
